Hartog Lucerne-mix is made of freshly chopped lucerne combined with green harvested oats and Alexander clover ingredients. This mix was conceived especially for guaranteeing high energy and reducing the protein content.
In addition, molasses and vegetable oil is added to this roughage mix, which results in a tastier, dust-free roughage with natural vitamin A, B, E, biotin, calcium, minerals and essential trace minerals such as copper, cobalt and selenium, as well as amino acids that are essential for the development of healthy bones and joints.
Fibre-rich feed is very important for a horse’s digestive system. This is why horse owners choose a product rich in texture in addition to concentrates. The high cellulose content of Hartog Lucerne-mix ensures better metabolism and intestinal functioning, self-evident in the horse’s manure. Horses maintain their proper weight and attain higher yields from their rations.
The natural content of vitamins, minerals and trace minerals are more than sufficient for meeting the basic needs of the horse.
Proteins that are created in artificial fertilization in pre-dried grass silage and hay are usually difficult to digest and can have adverse effects such as colic and thick legs. On the other hand, using Lucerne (a papilionaceous flowery type) the nitrogen in the air bonds with radial tuber bacteria and the result is an amino acid pattern that ensures fully digestible proteins. In addition, the artificial dehydration process used for Lucerne-mix plays a major role in breaking down the proteins for horses. The short heating period partly breaks down the proteins so that they are easily digested in the horse’s body.
The naturally prevalent biotine contents are very beneficial for the underside of the hooves. When you use Lucerne-mix, you will see that in many cases hoof problems simply evaporate. It’s a proven fact that horses fed with Lucerne-mix develop healthier and better quality undersides of their hooves.
Among horse breeders there is also awareness about the beneficial results of feeding Lucerne-mix during pregnancy and lactation for both mares and foals. Lucerne-mix has a high content of calcium and contains folic acid and β- carotene, essential vitamins for fertility. During pregnancy the calcium-phosphorus ratio is vitally important for the health of the mare and the bone development of the foetus. The high calcium content (3 times higher than in hay) and the essential amino acids in Lucerne-mix prevent OC (D) and contribute to an optimal development of bones and the muscular system. In addition, research studies show that calcium has a positive effect on a timely expulsion of the placenta.
Feeding advice
Total roughage alternative:
Approx. 1 kg of the product for every 100 kg weight of the horse
Alongside (average quality) hay:
1.5 - 3 kg per horse daily
1 - 2 kg per pony daily
A full 10-litre bucket of Lucerne-mix is approximately 1.5 kg.
If you are feeding only Lucerne-mix, it is recommended to add a phosphorus-rich feed, for example grains, in order to maintain proper calcium and phosphorus balance.
